A trigger happy Inspector of Police attached to Ughelli Area Command, has shot a driver of a blue GLA Mercedes Benz car, at a check point situated at Ekrerhavwen axis of the East/West Road, in Ughelli North local government Area of Delta State.
It was gathered that the victim, Oluwa Victor Iseoluwa Igbekele, was shot on the leg and his abdomen after a Stop and Search was conducted on them and their vehicle by the police .
According to one of the occupants in the vehicle whose name could not be ascertained, ” We were going to carry one of brother when the police stopped us while going towards Warri, and after conducting their search on the car, they could not find anything, they allowed us to move.
“As we were driving towards the second check point, all we heard a gun shot and my brother Victor shouted that he has be shot.
“Same police that passed us shot him on the leg, and stomach after shooting him, they were saying that the motor will not go anywhere.
“We rushed him to Central Hospital Ughelli, where we were told to buy blood to stabilize him as he has lost much blood.
“The medics referred him to Warri for possible operation as they did not have the equipment to ascertained the level of damage done to the intestines.” The wailing brother narrated.
A source from the Delta State Police, Command and who confirmed the incident said, “The police inspect, Samson other name withheld was immediately disarmed and taken to Ughelli Area command for debriefing and detention.The squad was led by ASP Anthony Kwada.”
Reacting to the incident, Delta Commissioner of Police, Wale Abass ordered for the immediate detention of the erring officer and his transfer to Police Headquarters, Asaba.
In a statement by the, State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Edafe Bright, “Following the shooting of one Lucky (surname unknown) by a Police Inspector on 5/12/2023 at about 1634hours at Ekrerhavwe Junction, Agbarho, while on stop and search duty, The Commissioner of Police, on receipt of the sad news, immediately ordered the arrest and detention of the errant police officer.
He also directed that the officer be immediately transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Asaba for a thorough and speedy investigation.
“CP Wale Abass commiserates the injured victim, wishing him a speedy recovery. He also noted that the Force, being a disciplined organization, will not condone such cruel action by any member of the Force, assuring that the offending officer will be subjected to internal disciplinary measures including criminal prosecution.
He, therefore, appealed to members of the public to remain calm and law-abiding, assuring them justice will not just be done but will be seen to have been done.”
